With more than one-third of its population below 18 years, India has the largest young population in the world. At the same time, 2 million children under the age of 5 die each year in India. 48% of Indian children are chronically malnourished, 8.15 million are out of school and 8.41% of the workforce is comprised of child labour. If India is to continue reaping it’s much talked about ‘demographic dividend’, there is urgent need to invest in children and their rights.
In this scenario, the business sector is emerging as an important stakeholder having the potential and responsibility to protect and promote child rights. Businesses can create a positive impact by leveraging their resources (human, financial and physical, technical expertise), their outreach to communities, and also their ability to advocate and influence the upper echelons of power.
UNICEF in collaboration with CSO Partners is launching a multi-stakeholder coalition with the objective of ‘Fostering business participation in protection and promotion of child rights in Tamil Nadu’. The coalition will be a common platform to bring together thought leaders from business and other sectors, enabling them to channelize their efforts towards a common goal.
UNICEF and CSO Partners are delighted to invite you to the launch of this coalition:
The coalition is conceived as an alliance of different stakeholders joining for the cause of fostering business participation in the protection and promotion of child rights in Tamil Nadu. It will consist of various stakeholder groups including: businesses and business federations in Tamil Nadu, NGOs, relevant government departments, UNICEF, select academic institutions and media representatives.
